The Small Business Revolution Sits Down with Ty & Lynne McDaniel of An Orange Moon

Ty & Lynne McDaniel

Ty McDaniel
CEO

Lynne McDaniel
Chief Marketing & Acquisition’s Officer

To talk shop, we sat down on a vintage Eames chaise across from co-owners Ty and Lynne McDaniel.

What was the process of opening like?

Lynne: We began hoarding furniture away in a 3-car garage and got our inventory together. I went out and found a space here in this neighborhood, and I signed the lease and said “we’re official!” Ty was still going to work and he would come home and take his suit off and just start painting or running new electrical – doing whatever we needed to do in the shop to open.
Ty: She kind of shoved me off the ledge. It was like being pushed off a ledge and into water. Now she says to swim and I’ve never swum a day in my life! I had to learn. Who are the designers? Who are the furniture makers? Why is this furniture here?  What is mid-century modern furniture? What is Art Deco furniture? What is French Revival? What is this stuff made out of? Why do people like this furniture? It’s a lot of things. I think the mid-century modern style is timeless.
Lynne: He’s an expert now. He really is. His opinion, his curation, his aesthetic. He’s extremely well-regarded.

What is WOW?

Lynne: It stands for “West of Western.” Meaning West of Western Avenue. We’re turning the image of this neighborhood, which used to be negative, into something positive. This is a small business shopping district now and we’re growing together. The big boxes won’t be able to get in because we’re hunkered down. I want to be sure everyone over here has good, strong, tight leases, with options to renew, so we can keep growing and getting stronger. It’s almost like a magnet effect. Someone wrote an article and they named me “the Goddess of WOW” and I hope that I can live up to the expectations! If we stick together, we’re going to the top together.

What’s your role, Ty, your vision?

Ty: We want to be different than the norm. My job is to make An Orange Moon the best vintage store in Chicago. Merchandising, curating, buying, other business aspects. But everything is a creative process. The whole store is a canvas. I want it to be an experience. A vibe. I hope we’ve created that.

Social media has offered powerful marketing opportunities to small businesses, but it can also be time-consuming. What’s your approach?

Lynne: My secret to social media is you don’t have to be on social media 24/7. Do what’s important and just speak from your heart. Whatever you do, stay positive. We hear too much negativity, just talk about the positive things. Talk about this beautiful new lamp you got in the shop and how somebody from Australia came in here and they just fell in love with you and you feel in love with them. Have fun.

How do you handle negotiation?

Ty: The negotiation is always fun. It’s a process. I like to phrase it “what’s the best you can do on this piece?” They put out a price. We come together. It’s bought. And in the store, 100% transparency is the only way of doing business.

What’s it like to work with your spouse?

Lynne: Let’s talk about the positives of working with your spouse. The positives are that your spouse knows every button, in a good way. You’re able to vent to your spouse at the end of the day. You can brainstorm new directions. You can pow-wow at any time. I don’t know if there’s anything better, really. The negative? You’re working with your spouse. (Laughs.) You guys are together all the time. You have to remember to maintain your own space and your own identity. That is so crucial. But the positive way outweighs the negative. I love it.

What’s the biggest challenge?

Ty: The furniture is beautiful. The pieces are what make people happy. But once people get their house furnished, that’s it – at least for a few years. So, we have to develop new customers on a regular basis. Consistently developing new customers is one of the biggest challenges. But we enjoy that.

An Orange Moon Featured in Time Out Chicago

Lynne and Ty of Orange Moon

Lynne McDaniel and her husband, Ty, had one requirement when they were scouting in Wicker Park for a new location for their vintage furniture shop, An Orange Moon (2418 W North Ave, 773-276-6726), and it had nothing to do with the customers’ shopping experience: They wanted a place where they could crash after their frequent parties on-and off-site. “I’m drinking, dancing, laughing,” says McDaniel, who’s known for fostering a sense of community at her many get-togethers. “I don’t want to get in the car and drive anywhere.” The raw 1,000-square-foot empty box attached to what’s now their North Avenue shop sealed the deal.

Orange March Design Profile: Urban Casita

Remember the historic estate sale we did in Hyde Park last year? Yes we did several, but specifically the estate of Ms. W. Tillman?
She was the first Black Woman anesthesiologist of the State of Illinois! One of her many claims to fame was the presidential correspondence (all beautifully framed) from at least 6 presidents, that hung on her Hyde Park condo walls!

I'll never forget that estate! Neither will Megan Jeyifo! She shopped smartly after confessing this was her first estate sale!
Like a "voi-sion," touched by Mid Century Modern design, for the very first time...

She came on the last day of this *White Box estate liquidation sale & swooped in and bought the killer, out of crate condition, LANE, Mid Century Modern monster below, for UNDER $100 dollars, & some other lovely vintage items.

Orange January Design Profile: Joules Jewels Vintage

New this year! Design Professionals making it do what it do!

First up, Jillian & Elvis...

"Elvis and I met in 2008 and have been crazy about each other since. Elvis and I love vintage so much we decided that we would only buy vintage for our home. They just don't make things the way they used to. The design is unmatched and the quality of the materials is exceptional.

If we could describe our personal style, it would be mid century meets quirky. Perhaps “Art Retro” would be an appropriate term. With my background in art and love for vintage, I see beauty in most things. Elvis loves a good mantique, and loves the marriage of design and function. 'I LOVE that description. Mid Century Modern meets quirky. Why because design is no good unless you mix it up. Is your entire space all Deco? Mission? French? Well okay, I get it if if's all French, but if you're reading this blog, you know Heidi Klum & I DO NOT believe in matchy-matchy. MODERNISTS, ALWAYS BELIEVE IN YOUR OWN DESIGN STYLE!'

Inside An Orange Moon

Rock This Moon, Rock It Inside Out
Bust out the brilliantine and lint-roll the sharkskin, cats, because tomorrow night Lynne and Ty McDaniel are having a stomp-the-floor party to celebrate the opening of An Orange Moon’s new Wicker Park perch at 2418 West North Avenue. This sharply edited vintage furniture emporium has been on my radar for a couple of years now, and I’m happy to see it blossom into a real player in the Chicago design community.

4/28/2011

He was digging the AOM vibe!
I could hear him behind me stating, "she's good!"
Before I hit the podium, I slipped him my card, and he replied,
"I'm sending someone over."
After we cut the ribbon, the audience swarmed the front  like "bees on honey."
I didn't get a chance to ask him if he's into Herman Miller or George Nelson.
No worries, I'll see him again. FYI-HE LOOKED MARVELOUS!  Will keep you posted!

Here's me & Alderman Thompson!
The best part of the entire event?!!

Black Friday Sale

By Bradley Lincoln

O-M-Gee!

I ran into the bubbly Lynne McDaniel at the Chairs for Charity event a couple of weeks ago, and she gave me a heads-up about the Black Friday sale she’s having at her Chicago Lawn vintage furniture store,
An Orange Moon.
(Next week Domestica will be coming to you on the day after Thanksgiving, so I thought you’d appreciate the advance notice.)
Lynne is discounting every-dang-thing in the store by 25 percent, through Sunday, November 28 and, as she’s known to do, serving complimentary featured beverages (Hennessey VSOP Cognac and Coronas this go-around) and playing themed music (hip-hop Christmas, natch).
The mid-century-centric shop is located at 2436 West 59th Street, and the sale is daily from 11–5.

This was truly an "old school" Christmas party.
Look at those hair-do's! Can you spot the lift operator?
Very Mad Men!!

Seek and Go Hyde

Lynne McDaniel, the ebullient owner of the Chicago Lawn antique furniture and vintage art store An Orange Moon (we told you all about it in the July/August issue, remember?), has an ambitious side biz running estate sales, and she told me about a whopper coming up this weekend in a Hyde Park Art Deco condo at 5000 S. Cornell Street. The consignee is a world-traveling 80-year-old widow with a penchant for mid-century-modern furniture, eclectic artwork, jewelry, rugs, French china, and mod clothing and furs, and it will all be offered for sale on-site this Friday thru Sunday, from 8 a.nm.-4 p.m. each day (cash only). “She also had a thing for the Chicago Bulls,” says Lynne. “I found autographed balls, tickets, and even Chicago Bulls handkerchiefs.” To make her tag sales social, Lynne likes to have jazz music playing and free drinks flowing, and as the sale progresses, prices drop. Everything is reduced 50 percent on Saturday and 75 percent on Sunday. If you can’t join the party, check out her shop, which she describes as “Erykah Badu meets South Beach meets Martha’s Vineyard!”

2010 WINNER BEST FURNITURE BOUTIQUE CHICAGO WEEKLY

Inside An Orange Moon, granny-chic takes on new life and starts to look pretty darn good. For a mid-century modern furniture addict, this store is a dream come true (the tequila shot offered when entering the store might be appreciated by a wider audience). Specializing in vintage furniture, An Orange Moon has a wide variety of unique Eames-era pieces. Teak embellishments and credenzas abound along with Italian Lucite folding chairs and re-upholstered retro couches. A nondescript bat wing chair has been refurbished to look completely fresh and modern. The décor is sunny and inviting, with avocado-green walls, purposely worn white floors, and an artful array of clutter. An Orange Moon also offers a selection of vintage clothing, pottery, and decorative artifacts. The self-described “über hip” store lives up to all that the phrase implies. 2436 W. 59th St. Friday-Sunday, 11am-5pm (summer hours). (312)450-9821. theculturalpsychologist.blogspot.com/
