There's a New Moon Rising In West Bucktown

There's a New Moon Rising In
West Bucktown

"I’m an orange moon,
I’m brighter than before,
And I shine so bright,
Because I reflect the light of my sun."

Being able to see and appreciate the true beauty in another soul is a thematic undertone in singer Erykah Badu’s passionate “Orange Moon.”

But being able to see and appreciate the true beauty in vintage furniture, with its exquisite dove-tailing, beautiful hard wood, and smooth patina? That’s the passion of Lynne and Ty McDaniel, who aptly named their high-end vintage furniture store “An Orange Moon” after Badu’s soulful song.

“My father was a real estate broker who owned hotels on the south side,” she adds. “Whenever I needed pocket money, he’d encourage me to go find something to sell from one of the buildings he was renovating. Vintage brass bedframes, French chairs, Victorian dressers – you name it, there was always something old and beautiful waiting to be discovered.”

Ty also grew up in Chicago a mere 8 blocks from Lynne, but the two didn't meet until years later when she completed her psychology practicum at his Bucktown practice. They later married, and in the process of setting up their home together, Ty developed his own love for Mid Century Modern design.

IMAGE: Lynne & Ty McDanielLynne and Ty were both clinical psychologists in 2009 when they left their successful careers behind them to follow their hearts and open An Orange Moon on 59th Street. The store quickly garnered legions of loyal fans drawn to their eclectic mix of home furnishings, including Mid Century Modern, Danish Modern, French, Mission, Victorian, Art Deco, Industrial, and Shabby Chic pieces. Today, the south side’s loss is West Bucktown’s gain as An Orange Moon opens its new doors this week at 2418 W. North Ave.

“We found that our core clientele tends to come from the Bucktown, Ukranian Village, Wicker Park, East Village and Logan Square areas,” notes Lynne. “Getting to the south side can be a bit of a haul with traffic. So rather than make Muhammad come to the mountain, we decided to bring the mountain here.”

Gone are the ugly iron bars that used to cover the building’s facade, and in their place is a gleaming windowed storefront that beckons passersby inside.

“What sets us apart from other vintage retailers is our broad selection of high-quality furnishings in impeccable condition at affordable prices,” Lynne emphasizes. “We source smart, and we’re able to pass those savings along to our clients. Great prices, high style – that’s what we’re all about.”

People may come for the vintage furniture bargains, but it's Lynne’s contagious enthusiasm for her craft – coupled with An Orange Moon’s uber hip, cool vibe – that keeps folks coming back. Pop into the store on any given evening, and you’ll be handed a glass of tequila or an ice-cold Corona to enjoy as you browse. “We want you to feel at home as you re-imagine your living space,” says Lynne.

See for yourself how An Orange Moon can help you create your own design adventure! Join Lynne and Ty on Friday, November 18 for their “re-mixed and re-imagined” grand opening party from 6:00 to 10:00 pm. Guests will enjoy live music, food and drinks provided by West On North, gift bags, and more! Mention this article and receive 15% off your purchase of $100 or more.
